War Department Ends Partnership with Harvard University
In a significant move, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced the War Department's decision to sever its academic ties with Harvard University, citing a mismatch between the institution's values and the needs of the military. This decision marks a shift in the department's approach to professional military education and training.
The announcement comes as a response to concerns about Harvard's alignment with military values and its relationships with foreign entities. Secretary Hegseth emphasized that the War Department has historically had a positive association with Harvard, dating back to the American Revolution. As a result, the War Department will discontinue graduate-level professional military education, fellowships, and certificate programs at Harvard, effective from the 2026-2027 academic year.

He mentioned that Harvard has produced numerous recipients of the Medal of Honor, more than any other civilian institution in the United States. However, the current climate at Harvard, including its relationships with foreign powers and its campus culture, has raised concerns about its suitability for military personnel.
The War Department plans to reassess its partnerships with other academic institutions, particularly Ivy League universities and civilian universities, to ensure cost-effective and strategic education for future senior leaders. This evaluation will consider the effectiveness of these institutions in delivering relevant and valuable programs compared to public universities and military-specific graduate programs.
Looking ahead, the War Department aims to focus on developing warriors, enhancing lethality, and reestablishing deterrence.
