Blizzard is shaking things up with an exciting rebranding of Overwatch 2, simplifying its name to just Overwatch, and rolling out an ambitious plan for expansion that is sure to capture the attention of gamers everywhere.
In a groundbreaking announcement, Blizzard revealed that in 2026, players can expect the addition of a total of 10 new heroes to the game. This significant transformation will kick off next week with the much-anticipated release of the first expansion titled "The Reign of Talon," scheduled for Tuesday, February 10th.
The standout feature of this update is the introduction of five new characters all at once—this marks the largest influx of new heroes in Overwatch's history, surpassing the original launch of Overwatch 2 by two characters. Additionally, throughout the year, another five heroes will join the roster, with one being introduced in each subsequent season of The Reign of Talon. This means that 2026 will see a total of 10 fresh faces, an unprecedented pace for the Overwatch franchise.
The new heroes span various roles, adding diverse abilities and play styles to the game. Here’s a quick rundown:
- Domina, a tank character reminiscent of Zarya,
- Emre, a damage dealer comparable to Soldier 76,
- Mizuki, a support hero equipped with a unique magical healing hat,
- Anran, a fiery damage dealer who ignites foes and fans the flames to inflict further damage,
- Jetpack Cat, a highly anticipated support character that can fly continuously and transport teammates or enemies through the air.

This shift to an annual release schedule has profound implications for storytelling within the game. Blizzard is moving away from a fragmented narrative approach to a more cohesive story arc that unfolds over the course of the year. The Reign of Talon will consist of six distinct seasonal releases, and the game's season count will reset to one, down from a previous tally of twenty, to align with this new direction.
Players will experience the story through familiar methods, including cinematic videos and animated comics. However, there’s a twist: now, players will be able to view and track the evolving storyline directly within the game itself, experiencing its impact during gameplay. Characters will reference story developments in their voice lines, and certain maps will undergo changes to reflect ongoing events. For instance, Watchpoint: Gibraltar will see structural modifications following an invasion by Talon's forces when The Reign of Talon commences.
To celebrate this extensive narrative, a five-week event called Conquest will allow players to choose sides between Overwatch and Talon in an engaging faction war. By selecting a side and completing objectives, players will earn points for their chosen faction as well as personal rewards.
But that’s not all—Overwatch is also receiving a complete overhaul of its user interface during The Reign of Talon. This redesign aims to streamline how information is presented to players and introduces a three-dimensional hero lobby, which will evolve into a fully-fledged party lobby starting in Season 4.
Moreover, new sub-roles are being added to the hero roster. These will enhance gameplay by providing specific perks based on the selected sub-role. For example, a Flanker like Tracer will benefit from increased health recovery from health packs, whereas a Medic such as Moira will heal herself while aiding others.
In addition, the recently launched Stadium mode, which allows players to develop their characters dynamically, will receive an icon refresh and will introduce a build helper feature designed to assist newer players.
Blizzard has also hinted at the arrival of two new core maps throughout the Reign of Talon year, along with the return of post-match accolades and adjustments to existing heroes (although specifics were not disclosed). Excitingly, a dedicated version for Switch 2 is set to launch alongside Season 2, with an expected release date in April.
This bold reimagining of Overwatch 2 comes at a time when the game faced challenges in garnering player interest upon its initial release. More importantly, it revitalizes excitement around the Overwatch universe.
