Amid US President Donald Trump's sanctions on Russia, India's refiners are diversifying their crude oil sources. While Russia remains India's top supplier, with around 1.179 million barrels per day in the first half of January, there's a noticeable shift towards alternative sources. Indian Oil, Nayara Energy, and Bharat Petroleum received Russian cargoes in the first half of January, but Reliance Industries, the largest buyer of Russian crude, did not import any during this period.
The country is now looking to Guyana and Saudi Arabia to fill the supply gap. After a two-year hiatus, India's refiners have resumed shipments from Guyana, and purchases from Saudi Arabia have increased by one-third in January to meet domestic fuel demand. Data from Kpler, a global analytics firm, shows that refiners sourced approximately 297,000 barrels per day from Guyana during the first half of the month.
This shift towards diversification is a strategic move to mitigate the impact of reduced Russian oil deliveries and growing uncertainty. While India's oil consumption remains strong, the country is also exploring other options, including West Asian producers like Saudi Arabia and Iraq, and African suppliers such as Nigeria and Angola. However, the UAE and the United States have seen a decrease in crude inflows, with volumes from the UAE dropping by 40% and arrivals from the US remaining largely unchanged during the first half of January.
India's position as the world's third-largest user and importer of crude oil highlights the importance of this strategic shift. As the country navigates the complexities of global oil markets, the diversification of sources is a crucial step towards ensuring energy security and resilience.
