Dacre, who led the paper for an impressive 26 years, has described the allegations against his journalists as "bitterly wounding." Dacre's empathy for Lawrence is evident, yet he strongly refutes the "lurid allegations" of landline tapping, hacking, and electronic surveillance, deeming them inconceivable and preposterous. He provides an intriguing detail, stating that one of the articles Lawrence takes issue with was personally given to him by then-Home Secretary Jack Straw, with whom Dacre had a friendly relationship.
